Adventures in Sixth Grade

The Past Three Years

Quarantined. Wow, that word really sucks. When you don’t know where and what to do or start. Ever since the 4th grade, I have been in and out of school because of two words,

“You’re quarantined.” The worst part about it is that when you are quarantined you don’t know what to do because you don’t have your teachers there to teach you, and it is so annoying. You still have to get everything turned in on time and it’s so hard because you don’t really know what you are doing.

First, when you are quarantined you don’t really know where to start. The teacher or the principal just said you are quarantined and to go get your stuff, so when you come home you don’t really know where to start. When you are doing your work from home, it can be a little bit hard and difficult to do. My experience was rough because I got quarantined a couple times and it was only me and my older sister home. She had to do her work and I had to do mine, so it was a little tricky.

Next, being quarantined was boring because you had no one to talk to. Another thing was you couldn’t see your friends and family because everything was shut down. One time I was so bored I started talking to myself a lot more than I usually do. When I was doing my work, it got a little confusing because I didn’t have a teacher there to teach me what to do. When I was home and didn’t know what to start on, I’d usually end up scrolling through the work to see what to start at.

In addition, you really end up sitting there staring at your chromebook for hours and end up doing nothing the first day. “I don’t know where to start” were my exact words when I got quarantined. The first time I got quarantined was last year in fifth grade from my teacher getting Covid.

Second, a bunch of stuff has happened in the last couple years. I had colds but I never ended up with covid before and I hope I don’t. My mom and my sister did get sick pretty bad but they didn’t have Covid. First it was my mom who got really sick and it was hard because she usually does a lot of the stuff around the house. When my dad was going to cook, he did not know what to cook because my mom usually picks out what we eat every night.

Therefore,  a couple weeks or months pass and my sister gets sick and it was kind of hard to stay away from her because we share a room and have bunk beds so we are pretty close to each other all the time. It basically went through everyone in my household, and some of us had it bad and some of us had a stuffy nose and a sore throat or other things. I did get sick but I didn’t get it that bad like my mom or my sister, but it did get hard to breath a couple of times. Not all of us just had a cold. I was pretty sure that my mom had Covid the testing just wasn’t coming back right because she couldn’t smell or taste. Same with my sister but she could smell and taste.

For example, Covid and my experience was not as bad as other people’s were. I never had Covid in the last couple years, but I know people who have. One of my friends had it before and it wasn’t good because he was really sick.  I have had to take medicine through being sick. I haven’t had to take medicine to cure Covid.  Most of the time I was quarantined, I didn’t really know what to do and when I was done with my stuff, I usually  sat there talking to my friends or watching tv.

In conclusion, no one really likes covid. I mean, who would? Having Covid can do a lot of damage to you and can even kill. That is how bad it could get. My thoughts on it are that it sucks, and I want it to go away so bad. Even better, I hope the scientists find a cure to make it go away.

School During the Pandemic

Written by Elizabeth W.

Back in 2019 when I was in 4th grade, school got shut down because of Covid. It was challenging with all of the packets and virtual stuff which we had no experience with at all. It all just happened at once, no time to think, and I had no idea it was going to last this long.

We have been in and out of quarantine several times since then and every one would think we would be used to it by now. That everything would be as simple as normal, but it is not…not at all.  When you are quarantined, it is really confusing. You have an assignment but sometimes it feels like you still do not know what to do. It is like the things that make sense in school just don’t make sense anymore.

Sometimes when you are quarantined individually your work gets sent home on the computer.  You do not just see the work that you are supposed to do, you can see what the kids in school are doing and that makes it tough to know what you need to get done and what you need to wait on, and most of the time you still have work to make up when you get back.

When you are at school you have to wear a mask which I feel is distracting and uncomfortable. You also can’t see many facial expressions, only through the eyes. You also miss out on a lot of things that would have been done in previous years before Covid-19. For instance, this year we are not allowed to have lockers or do games or activities in which we would have to get too close. Things like field trips may also be affected. After a quarantine and you go back to school, it seems like you have been gone forever which is funny because really only been gone for 1 to 2 weeks in most cases.

There are also positive things about being quarantined though: you get to sleep in a little bit, start on your work whenever you are ready, take a break when you need one, be with family,  eat what you are in the mood for and whenever you want, you can work extra so you have less to do the next day, and you could also do your work outside in the kitchen or living room where ever you want really.

Although learning in a pandemic is hard, it is no one’s fault if you have to be quarantined. Wear a mask, miss out on exciting activities, or social  distance because it is not only tough for you, it is tough for everyone. So you just have to keep going, keep trying, and know that it is not just you that feels confused. So ask questions and do what you can. It is not the same when you are quarantined, but it is not all bad. There are positives and negatives and it is different for everyone.
